Read on to find out why.

I’ve got a keynote speech in October.
It’s the first time I’m delivering to an audience this size in a long while.
So lately my evenings consist of me in the living room, running through lines while the dog tilts his head like, “Really? Again?”
When I first started practicing, it didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped.
By the third run-through, I noticed something I didn’t want to admit.
I wasn’t landing the way I thought I was.
I was speaking too fast, using too many gestures, and my energy didn’t match my words.
It took more tries than I expected to start getting it right.
And it got me thinking about coaching and how we show up for our clients.
We preach to our clients all the time about the importance of preparation.
Prepare. Practice. Polish.
We drill them on interview answers.
We role-play recruiter calls.
We remind them that tone and body language matter just as much as the résumé.
But when’s the last time we did it for ourselves?
How often do we check in on our own delivery?
Career coaching is forward-facing.
Clients are sizing us up in the first 10 seconds, the same way a hiring manager sizes up them.
A strong first impression sets the foundation for the coaching relationship that follows.
That’s a reason to get intentional with our own delivery.
Here’s a simple way to practice:
Record yourself giving your “what I do” pitch.
Watch it back once on mute.
Then listen with your eyes closed.
Ask: Would I trust this person? Would I hire them?
As I refine my own delivery, I keep reminding myself: our clients don’t expect us to be flawless.
They expect us to be present. They want to feel that we believe in this work enough to do it ourselves.
So if you find yourself cringing at the replay, take that as a good sign.
It means you care. It means you’re willing to adjust.
And that willingness to improve is the best guiding light for your clients.
Wish me luck,
Heather
