Not every client is the right fit.

And that’s okay.

One of the things we don’t talk about enough as career coaches is how often we’re working with folks who just aren’t a match for us. We either have to work with them because of how our job is structured, or we choose to because we need to get our business off the ground.

But eventually, you reach a point where you have to stop and ask yourself:

Who do I actually enjoy working with?

Who do I do my best work with?

That’s what I want to talk about today.

When you get clear on the kind of client you’re aligned with, everything starts to shift in a really good way.

We’re trained to serve everyone. But we’re not meant to.

This happens all the time:

  • If you’re working in higher ed or a corporate coaching setting, you’re supporting undergrads, alumni, career changers, adults going back to school—you name it.

  • If you’re in private practice, especially in the early days, you say yes to everybody. You’re trying to build something. I get it.

Over time, we start believing we should be able to coach everyone.

But even if you technically can, that doesn’t mean you should.

You already know who your people are.

Think back.

You’ve had clients who showed up ready. Clients you looked forward to meeting. Clients who made progress fast and gave you energy.

That didn’t happen by accident.

Something about that person — maybe their personality, their mindset, or the season they were in —just fit with how you coach.

I’ve been coaching clients and career professionals for years. Working with career professionals has always given me the most satisfaction.

It’s less random than you think.

You’re drawn to certain clients for a reason.

As career coaches, we all bring different things to the table.

Our personalities.

Our values.

Our expertise.

Our life experiences.

But rarely are we prompted to sit down and ask:

  • Who am I best equipped to coach?

  • What kind of coaching relationships bring out my best?

  • Where do I feel most in flow?

We just don’t talk about it.

And because of that, we miss a huge opportunity to shape our work in a way that’s both more impactful and more sustainable.

Most coaches don’t realize they can define a client match.

Instead, we just keep powering through the tough fits and assume that feeling drained is part of the job.

When I finally sat down and reflected on the clients who got the best results and brought me the most energy, my coaching practice shifted from mid-senior level clients in career transition to full-time coaching career professionals.

I had clarity and direct alignment with my ICP.

And I want that same alignment for you...

So I created a tool to help other coaches get that same clarity.

This will help you identify your ideal client match.

I built a short, ideal client persona tool.

It gives you a snapshot of the client you’re most aligned with.

  1. Take the quiz. It’s 16 intentional questions.

  2. Get your persona. You’ll get a 3-page profile of your Ideal Client Persona.

  3. See how to apply it. You’ll get 3 to 4 quick ways to take action—whether that’s shifting your messaging, refining your offers, or just being more intentional with how you market.

  4. Book a session. To go deeper, schedule a 1:1 session to explore how to align your coaching practice with your match.

When I ran the pilot, every single career coach said some version of “I wish I had this earlier.”

Even experienced coaches told me it helped them think differently about how they show up and who they want to serve.

Working with aligned clients changes everything.

I’m not saying you’ll never coach someone outside your ideal match. Of course you will. But when you do get to work with someone who really fits, these are some of the benefits:

  • Sessions feel easier.

  • Clients move faster.

  • You stop dreading certain meetings.

  • Your energy goes up, not down.

  • And most importantly? You’re doing work that feels meaningful.

That’s the goal.

Let’s figure out who lights you up.

If you’ve ever had that feeling of, “Wow, I wish all my clients were like this one,” then this is for you.

Because the more clarity you have on who you serve best, the more your messaging, your marketing, and your business start to work in your favor.

It’s free. And it could be the first step toward doing your best work, with the clients who bring out your best.

Let’s get you there.
